Description:

The American Thrombosis and Hemostasis Network (ATHN) is a non-profit, 501(c)3 corporation founded in 2006. ATHN provides a national informatics platform and public health services that support clinical care and outcomes analysis, research, advocacy, and public health reporting in communities affected by blood disorders. ATHN partners with a network of over 150 affiliated clinical sites (ATHN Affiliate Network) conducting research, surveillance, and data quality improvement initiatives. In addition, ATHN partners with government programs, community-based organizations, and industry, with the ultimate goal of improving the care and quality of life for those affected by blood disorders.

 

ATHN is a virtual organization, meaning the entire ATHN staff are remote workers. We rely on modern communication tools to create a collective sense of connection with each other to fulfill our mission.

 

Summary:

The Data Engineer position reports to the Director, Data Science.  As a member of the data science team, ATHN’s Data Engineer primary responsibility is to design, and implement business intelligent solutions that enable data-driven decision making across ATHN. This role involves end-to-end business intelligence (BI) development – from data modeling and transformation to visualization and dashboard utilizing Microsoft Power BI and related Azure services. This role collaborates with cross-functional teams at ATHN, clients and partners.

 

Essential Job Functions / Responsibilities:

·       Develop and manage data marts, database views, and analytical schemas to support reporting and downstream analytics.

·       Work with relational databases and understand normalized vs. denormalized data structures.

·       Interpret and work with JSON and semi-structured data, including parsing, flattening, and transforming nested structures for analytical use.

·       Write and optimize complex SQL queries for data extraction, transformation, and validation.

·       Design and build interactive dashboards, reports, and visualizations using Microsoft Power BI.

·       Develop advanced DAX calculations, measures, and calculated columns to meet analytical and reporting requirements.

·       Implement and support DirectQuery, Composite models, and ETL/ELT workflows as needed.

·       Ensure data accuracy, consistency, security, and governance following Power BI best practices.

·       Troubleshoot and resolve issues within Power BI semantic models, datasets, and reports.

·       Monitor report and model performance and implement optimization and performance tuning strategies.

·       Stay current with industry trends, Power BI platform updates, and data modeling best practices.

 

Education & Experience:

·       A bachelor’s degree per commensurate experience in Data Engineering, Data Science, Computer Science, Business Intelligence, or other related fields preferred.

·       3 to 5 years of experience as a Microsoft Power BI developer.

 

Skills:

·       Ability to translate business requirements into technical BI solutions

·       Proficiency in

o   DAX (Data Analysis Expressions) calculations

o   Power Query / M Language

o   Data modeling concepts

·       Strong SQL skills for querying, manipulating relational databases, and data warehouse concepts.

·       Experience with DirectQuery, Composite models, Incremental refresh and performance tuning.

·       Expertise in performance tuning and optimization of Power BI reports and SQL queries.

·       Familiarity with advanced analytics, and machine learning concepts for enhanced data insights.

·       Ability to work on complex projects and deliver results

·       Certification in Power BI are highly desirable.

Travel: Infrequent. As needed to attend staff meetings and conferences.

 

Salary Range: Competitive benefits and a fair salary that reflects your qualifications, and the experience you will bring to our team. $100,000 - $125,000 a year.
