ABOUT OAG:
The Office of the Attorney General and Department of Law & Public Safety are dedicated to making New Jersey safe for all its residents and visitors. ABOUT OJD:
The Office of Justice Data (OJD) works with multiple offices and Divisions in the criminal justice system to coordinate data collection efforts, synthesize and consolidate data from various sources to assess ongoing policies and initiatives and to inform future projects. With a particular focus on law enforcement data, OJD promotes transparency and accountability in data through timely and accessible public data releases. In addition, OJD will work with other criminal justice and law enforcement stakeholders to ensure that New Jersey’s criminal justice policymaking is rooted in data and rigorous statistical analysis.
DUTIES:
The Research Scientist supervises staff tasked with the production of reports and data analysis on justice related topics in the State to inform policymakers of data trends and promote transparency regarding law enforcement matters; assigns work and evaluates performance.
The Research Scientist also:
Establishes performance metrics and the objectives of the unit.
Directs the work of lower-level analysts to provide graphics for the visualization of analytical findings and conclusions to facilitate public accountability and transparency.
Coordinates work priorities and deadlines to ensure the timely delivery of projects and analytic measures.
Implements plans and procedures to develop, investigate, review, and modify analytical plans and programs to investigate area(s) of topical interest.
Assists in the development and revision of data collection protocols from various data sources, including methods to streamline user experience and analytical workload.
Serves as the subject-matter expert in various areas including, but not limited to, law enforcement, courts, corrections, parole, and other topics related to the criminal justice system and its reform.
Implements and carries out specialized research and/or analytical programs upon reviewing statistical and graphical research data mined by lower-level staff.
Prepares reports of findings deduced from data recorded and makes recommendations to the Chief Data Officer, Office of Justice Data.
Supervises methodologically rigorous analyses to include the preparation of sound, accurate publications, memoranda, and reports relating to research, grant, and other activities containing findings, conclusions, or recommendations.
Performs other related work as needed.
REQUIREMENTS:
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master's degree in a discipline appropriate to the position and four (4) years of experience in a field appropriate to the position. A Doctorate in a discipline appropriate to the position may be substituted for two (2) years of experience indicated above.
Preference will be given to applicants with a Master’s Degree in a data-related field or social science field.
