Data is a crucial part of Shopify’s mission to make commerce better for everyone. We organize and interpret petabytes of data to provide solutions for our merchants and stakeholders across the organization. From pipelines and schema design to building data products, Data Development at Shopify is a diverse role with many opportunities to positively impact our success.
Insights plays a central role in realizing Shopify's mission, by guiding merchants towards the next best possible action they need to take to grow their businesses. As a Data Developer Manager on Insights, you will have an opportunity to provide hands on technical guidance to data developers as well as grow your engineering management point of view. In this role, you will be collaborating heavily with data scientists, engineers, product and UX leads in Insights in ensuring that the team is set up for success.
As a Development Manager on Insights, you’ll be:
Managing a team of data developers, helping them prioritize, build and ship the most impactful features to merchants
Working on problems with your teams, roll up your sleeves: build prototypes, contribute to reviews and set the standard of operation for the team.
Advocating for cross-discipline collaboration, and the impact of reliable data pipelines on the product roadmap
Growing and building a high performing data development team both through internal development and hiring
Qualifications
You will need to have:
Proven experience managing data development teams with strong focus on business impact
Experience building data pipelines and driving ETL design decisions
Proven technical leadership skills using technologies and frameworks similar to Shopify's
Experience hiring and mentoring high-caliber, data-focused engineers and managers with diverse technical strengths and background.
Highly technical and familiar with all components of a typical data stack (ranging from data acquisition, storage, modeling and process, to serving). You don’t mind getting into the nitty gritty or jumping into the code.
Exceptional communication skills, you can easily translate technical concepts into easy to understand language for our stakeholders and partners, both technical and non-technical.
Ability to design cross-org performance and improvement metrics and turn that into roadmaps for the teams.
You have successfully led and grown data development teams in your career.
You are committed to continuous improvement, technical excellence and results.
You should have one or more of:
Deep expertise of Spark or related large scale batch processing engines
Comfortable using a streaming processing engine (Flink, Dataflow, Kafka Streams)
Deep understanding of advanced SQL and Python techniques
Domain experience in e-commerce, SaaS or retail analytics, or related areas
Understanding of recency, latency, performance, efficiency, monitoring and change management.
