Job Summary:
The University IT Services (UITS) Enterprise Data and Analytics (EDA) team is responsible for developing and managing shared services in the area of data and analytics for the entire UMass university system. These include:
- Data services such as the Enterprise Data Warehouse, Data Lake, and related data integrations
- Reporting, visualizations, and analytics tools for self-service use of university personnel
- Data analysis and development services for various business lines including development of interactive dashboards and analytics
The Senior Data Engineer is a key contributor in the EDA team, providing expertise in modeling data structures and designing, building, and optimizing data mappings. They are experienced in multiple data management technologies and support data analytics and data scientists in answering complex data driven business questions.
Essential Functions:
Responsibilities and duties will include:
- Supporting data analysts’ needs for structured and transformed data
- Gathering and translating data requirements into technical specifications
- Design and development of data structures to meet reporting and analytics needs
- Design, development, and optimization of data transformations and flows and their upkeep
- Solving complex data related problems
- Developing cloud and on-premise data flows
- Contribution to management of data and analytics platforms and operations, including monitoring and performance analysis
Other Functions:
Additional responsibilities could also include (depending on individual’s experience and interest):
- Development of reports, visualizations, analytics and their delivery to end users
- Helps with setting long term data and analytics objectives and goals for the enterprise
- Data analysis in a specific data subject area(s) – i.e. student, finance, HR, etc.
- Development of metadata layer for reporting tools
- Development of advanced analytics content
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience):
- Bachelor’s Degree in MIS, Computer Science, Statistics, or business-related field
- 9+ years in business analysis or technical roles with the last 5 concentrating in data engineering
- Strong understanding of SQL and/or PLSQL, and performance tuning
- Specific experience developing data extracts, transformations, and loads
- Strong communications skills both written and oral
- Experience with at least one Data Integration tool on the level of Dell Boomi, DataStage, or Informatica
- Solid interpersonal skills, with ability to work well with people of all levels in both technical and business settings
Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience):
- Dell Boomi experience
- OBIEE, OAC, Tableau, R, Python or other reporting, visualization, and analytics tool experience
- Cloud data movement experience, experience with Data Lakes and related concepts
- Finance, HR, Student Administration, or Advancement data experience in Higher Education
- PeopleSoft experience
- Data Science training

Typical office environment.
Additional Details:
Salary commensurate with experience up to $130,000.
